I started reading this one whilst on holiday in Majorca a couple of years ago..

In some ways it was kinda cool reading words and being able to picture scenes from the original game that Perry was trying to describe.. but in others it was re-reading a story I'd already read several times.

The holiday ended before I managed to finish the book, and I'm not particularly inclined to go back to it. I'll probably just skip ahead to Caliban Cove.

I ordered the first 4 books from Forbidden Planet about 25 years ago thinking they were graphic novel adaptations of the games, so I was slightly disappointed when they arrived.

But once I started reading the first one I became hooked and proceeded to absorb them all in rapid succession. They all have their strong and weak points, I personally still love them and find myself revisiting them occasionally.

The first one is very good in how it handles things from each characters' perspectives, and provided a way to allow both Jill and Chris to navigate the mansion at the same time without bumping into each other. It's quite cleverly written in how it handles and translates the bizarre gameplay mechanics into a semi-serious narrative. I also liked the mysterious Trent character that Perry invented for these novels.

If they ever want to make a faithful adaptation of a movie from the first game, they should use this novel as a basis. I'm surprised it hasn't been done already.
